Hello everyone,

Can someone let me know how they feel about bringing a Serra into a family that has a one year old baby?

Is a Serra the right type of dog to be growing up with a baby?

Thank you.

Hi I have posted your question on Facebook the group Portuguese Sheepdog- Cao da Serra de Aires has a large number of very experienced members. I recommend that you join if you haven't already. It's membership is also global. I will let you know of any responses I receive. There are many variables in answering your question. Firstly, if you forgive me: how experienced are you with dogs and what breed? A serra is a highly active, intelligent dog needing much excercise and mental activity. It's a working breed so is protective, independent, needing lots of good socialisation when a puppy. It tends to follow one leader in the family. Its coat also needs attention. Regular grooming is important and familiarisation with lying still while being groomed has to begin as a puppy. I have no children and no one in the UK to my knowledge has introduced a serra into a family with a baby. Off the top of my head there could be competition for attention between puppy and baby with any breed. Sometimes it's better to wait so that a proper focus can be given each introduction when adding to a family group. Sorry if this doesn't help much Wink
